DEBORAH JOWITT (New York, USA)

Deborah Jowitt began her professional dance career in 1953. Ten years later she helped to found the Dance Theatre Workshop in New York to present her own choreography and that of colleagues. She is known as one of the prominent voices in the field of dance and dance criticism. Since 1967 she has written a dance column in The Village Voice. In addition she has published the series Dance Beat and Dance in Mind and the book Time and the Dancing Image, which was awarded the Torre Bueno Prize. Jowitt is a popular speaker and has lectured at the University of Copenhagen, Harvard University in Boston, Princeton University in New Jersey, the London Contemporary School of Dance, the Theatre Academy in Helsinki and the Dance Department of New York's Tisch School of the Arts, where she has taught since 1975.She will open and close the conference with a reflection on the past, present and future. She will also chair the workshop on ethics in dance.
