WORKSHOPS ROUND 3

A. CAREER IN DANCE // Taking charge of your life // Lifestyle management
Cees Vervoorn // David Collins // Hanno van der Loo
A career in dance is often seen more as a lifestyle than a profession. Dancers often identify themselves with their profession. What ways are there to cope with the demands and characteristics that go with the profession? How do you maintain your professionalism? An exploration of the border between unconditional dedication and professional distance. Are there tools to regulate an irregular life?
Lecture - Discussion

B. DANCE CULTURE // Groups dynamics
Jacques van Rossum // Brigitte martin // Anouk van Dijk
Often dancers dream of becoming a soloist. At the same time, good performances are usually the result of close collaboration. What could the concept of group dynamics mean in a dance company? How can the contradictions of group interests and those of the individual be dealt with? Colleagues are as much friends as competitors. A comparison will be made with the world of sports and experiences will be exchanged and shared.

C. EDUCATION // C’est le ton qui fait la musique // Strategies for the practice of Teaching
Joysanne Sidimus, vz // Rachel-Ann Rist
In the educational dance environment there is an undefined line between criticism and feedback. Emphasizing weaknesses, rather then celebrating achievements is still commonpractice. This session will reflect on ways to offer feedback to benefit the dance student, effective communication with dance students and dancers, and ways to improve teaching competence.
Lecture - Discussion

D. MANAGEMENT // Getting the best performance out of dancers
Stef Avezaath, vz // Matthew Wyon
The workshop will look at methods to help dancers focus both mentally and physically on the forthcoming performance. How can dancers prepare for optimum results? An opportunity to look at ways to implement theoretical principles to actual company requirements and how long and short term planning can be implemented in company schedules.
Lecture - Discussion

E. PRACTICAL TRAINING // Empowerment
Elena Estanol
Interactive workshop focusing on the acquisition of coping skills and strategies to help dancers enhance their performance and their ability to handle pressure in the dance world. Dancers and teachers alike will be introduced to the five basic skills necessary to be able to enhance their performance, be more consistent between practice and performance, and increase their ability to handle the pressures of performing. The workshop will focus on allowing the participants to experience several relaxation techniques to deal with performance anxiety, cognitive restructuring techniques to improve their confidence through several activities, and to increase their motivation and concentration skills that are requirements in the multifaceted demands that dancers currently experience
Workshop

F. MEDICAL // Dancers' heel: causes, prevention and (new forms of) treatment Boni Rietveld, vz // Niek van Dijk
The condition known as dancers' heel makes relevé and pointe limited and painful because of bony or soft tissue impingement in the back of the ankle. It is strongly linked to dancers' tendinitis, in which demi-plié and working "through the foot" is painful. These are common injuries not only in classical ballet dancers, but also in all other dance forms. The causes and prevention of both injuries will be discussed. If conservative treatment fails operation gives excellent results.`This used to be an "open" procedure. The new “endoscopic” operative technique will be explained and discussed.’
